My last major pre-pandemic trip was in October 2019 when I took a train from the Georgian capital of Tbilisi to the Azerbaijani equivalent on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The overnight train started in the darkness in Tbilisi and saw us waking to the oil fields and industrial heartland of the former Soviet.
