Euro 24 Match Day 9 – Georgia v Czech Republic
Georgia Tbilisi is one of my favourite capital cities in Europe. It’s a great blend of old (historic quarter, Arabic bathhouses, ancient tea houses) and modern (cable car, unusual bridges). The feel is vibrant – cuisine is cheap & tasty, the local red wine gorgeous and the music scene jumping. Mother of Georgia stands atop […]
Euro 24 Match Day 5 – Turkey v Georgia
Neighbouring countries battle it out in what could be termed a Black Sea derby! Turkey In 2015 I visited Georgia overland from Turkey. The journey started in Istanbul – the suburb of Pendik on the Asian side to be exact. This gave the opportunity to travel on the brand new Marmaray Line which runs 60 […]
Tuesday Train – Tbilisi to Baku Overnight
In October 2019 my mate Hamish and I took the overnight train from the Georgian capital to the Azerbaijani primary city on the Caspian Sea. The Kukushka (translates as little cuckoo in Russian) is a 37 km narrow-gauge railway linking the national park town of Borjomi to the village & ski resort of Bakuriani in Georgia. The construction of the 900mm wide line began in 1897, when Georgia was still […]
The (Very Delayed) Tuesday Train – Baku in Azerbaijan
My last major pre-pandemic trip was in October 2019 when I took a train from the Georgian capital of Tbilisi to the Azerbaijani equivalent on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The overnight train started in the darkness in Tbilisi and saw us waking to the oil fields and industrial heartland of the former Soviet.
My Iconic Travel Moments – 2011 to 2019 (#5) – A Journey To Georgia
Number 5 – Train to Georgia You may well know by now that I love an overnight train journey – throw in a dining car with fabulous views too and I am completely bowled over! In 2015 I travelled to Georgia from Istanbul, taking a train to the edge of the Kurdish region of Turkey […]
Tuesday Train Journey – Batumi to Tbilisi in Georgia
Continuing my weekly series of overseas train trips from down the years…….. To set the scene, Hamish & I were embarking on an overnight train from Batumi on the Black Sea Coast of Georgia to Yerevan, the splendid capital of Armenia, via Tbilisi. We had booked a berth each on the overnight sleeper on an […]
Sunday Photos – Tbilisi in Georgia
The capital of Georgia is a magnificent city where ancient & modern architecture meet. The first photo shown is the view of the city from high up on the fortified hill. The second is a close up of the Orthodox Church that you can see in the distance in the first photo.
