France
Lyon is the gastronomic capital of France with many Michelin star restaurants (21 at time of writing) and some fine classical cafes.
The city is on the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers and makes for a perfect place for a riverside stroll.
You can catch a funicular up the steep hill to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière that affords great views of the city below.
The church itself is definitely worth a visit, before you saunter down hill via a winding path through colourful gardens.
Switzerland
Zermatt is an Alpine ski resort that we reached on the iconic Glacier Express from St Moritz.
We only stayed one night with plans to take a cog railway trip into the lower mountain area followed by a cable car to ‘the top of the world’ scuppered by rain and mist.
Luckily we arrived on a clear day and our hotel balcony gave a great view to the majestic Matterhorn.
