One of the things that I have noticed on my travels in Eastern Europe is the propensity for men to play board games out in the open.

This photo was taken in Lviv, Ukraine and shows the park benches occupied by men playing chess.

It was serious stuff too with clocks used to limit time between moves and small crowds gathering to watch.

I think money may have been at stake….
