Monday Morning Blues – Lyab-i Hauz, Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Today’s photo aimed at beating the Monday morning blues comes from my 2018 trip to Uzbekistan. Lyab-i Hauz is the name of the area surrounding one of the few remaining hauz (ponds) that have survived in the city. Until the Soviet period there were many such ponds, which were the city’s principal source of water, but […]

Travel is a great defining constant in my life and as I reflect on the last ten years of travels, I am extremely grateful that I am able to indulge in my passion on a regular basis. I have visited 22 new countries in the decade and revisited many more old favourites. I found it […]

Sunday Photos – Camels

Today’s photo collection features that ridiculous looking but truly amazing creature, the camel. Without the ship of the desert there would have been no Silk Route, no Samarkand and perhaps little or no amazing Islamic architecture throughout Central Asia. Central Asia – The Joy of Looking Up

Whilst on my travels through Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan & Uzbekistan, I was taken aback by the sheer beauty of the Islamic art & architecture. Sunday Photo – Earthquake Monument, Tashkent, Uzbekistan

On 26 April 1966, at 5:24 a.m., an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.3 shook the city. It changed Tashkent”s appearance forever. Half of the city’s inhabitants were left without a roof over their heads and had to live in tents. The earthquake had had its epicentre at a depth of 10 km right under […]

Monday Morning Blues – The Lyabi-Khauz, Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is a truly magical country to visit and Bukhara is certainly one of the jewels in the crown. The ancient Silk Road city is stuffed full of wonderful Islamic architecture. Lyabi-Khauz is right in the centre featuring wonderful madrasahs and caravanserai. The pool used to be a watering hole for thirsty camels.
