I went to Urganch in 2018 – well to Urganch train station anyway.
At the time Urganch was the nearest train station to the wonderful Silk Road city of Khiva and it was there that we travelled on an overnight train from Samarkand, as well as leaving from there a few days later for another overnight train to Tashkent.
Now that Khiva has its own train station I am guessing that not too many foreigners will travel to its near neighbour.
Here are a few of my favourite photos of Khiva (sorry Urganch!).

Khiva Train Station – yet to open when we visited
I will be writing much more about my travels in Uzbekistan including much more detail about my time in Khiva in a forthcoming book about the former Soviet Union,
In the meantime my travels around the Balkans are already published in a book and available now from Amazon.
The city beginning with the letter U that I would most like to visit that I haven’t yet?
That’s easy – Ulaan Baator in Mongolia. I have booked to go in September as part of a trip from St Petersburg to Beijing but severely doubt it will happen then.
How about you?
Look out for V tomorrow.
I really like all of those towers.
Now V, what could it be…
Valencia
Verona
Vaduz
I have discounted Venice as way too obvious!
All great places but I am outside Europe again.
In that case it has to be Vientiane
On the basis that I haven’t been to Vladivostok…
