Tuesday Train – Simferopol to Lvov in Ukraine
With my thrice aborted attempt to take the trans-Siberian train, at 27 hours this 2011 trip remains my longest train journey. We actually started out from Sevastopol, a further 90-minutes south in Crimea. Total distance in excess of 1,000 km. You can see on the map below the area travelled. Unfortunately the cities shown have […]
Tuesday Train – Tbilisi to Baku Overnight
In October 2019 my mate Hamish and I took the overnight train from the Georgian capital to the Azerbaijani primary city on the Caspian Sea. We left at 20.35 from the rather boring train station set around a shopping mall. Trains are few and far between in Tbilisi with all the daily trains fitting on […]
Tuesday Train – Ashgabat in Turkmenistan
Back in 2018 I undertook a single train journey in Turkmenistan, from the capital to Mary in the east of the country. We were informed that we were not allowed to take photos. I however got permission to take just one, though as you might expect I sneaked a few more in! Ashgabat has many […]
Tuesday Train – The Maglev, Shanghai
It has been a long held ambition of mine to take the world’s first commercial Maglev train from Shanghai Airport to Longyang Road Station in the centre of the city. A chance recently presented itself when we flew via the vibrant Chinese metropolis to and from Tokyo. A top speed of 430k/mh, though slightly disappointing […]
Late Running Tuesday Trains – Japan
I am just back from the land of the rising sun. It was a magical trip where we saw Fuji San and experienced Sakura (cherry blossoms). Here are some pictures combining trains with blossom. And here is Fuji San taken from the train.
Tuesday Train, The Shinkansen, Mishima in Japan
This week I took my first ever bullet train from Mishima to Kyoto. 300kmh. Japan is developing a maglev network to go even faster – I need to come back!
Tuesday Train – The Tozan, Hakone-Yumoto in Japan
This is actually a picture from today. We are in the Hakone region, which on a good day affords views of iconic Mount Fuji. Unfortunately today is very rainy so that view is left for another day.
The Overdue Tuesday Train – King’s Cross, London
Last week I took a lovely LNER Azuma train from London to Newcastle to meet a friend to go to some National Hunt horse racing meetings. Over four days we took in racing at Newcastle, Catterick, Carlisle and Ayr, staying two nights in Northallerton in North Yorkshire and two in Edinburgh, using buses and trains […]
Tuesday Train – Aleppo in Syria
In 2009 I travelled to Aleppo by train, bus & taxi from Istanbul. An epic journey to what became my favourite city that sadly has suffered so much in the intervening years. Whilst there we took a train to Latakia on the Mediterranean coast. A strategic port, it became a base for the Russian navy […]
Tuesday Train – Ashgabat in Turkmenistan
Turkmenistan was visited in 2018, a rather odd but fascinating country. We took a train from capital Ashgabat eastwards to Mary as we made our way to Uzbekistan. Officially you were not allowed to take photographs but I negotiated to be allowed to take one but sneaked in a couple more!
