Friday Photo – The Ark & Kalta-minor Minaret, Khiva, Uzbekistan
Khiva was the third major place I visited in Uzbekistan in 2018 after Bukhara & Samarkand. Despite such fierce competition, the walled city did not disappoint.

I visited Split in October 2012 on a rail trip around the Balkans. We started the journey in the excellent Croatian capital Zagreb and then took an overnight train to the Dalmatian Coast to the wonderful city of Split, where we were met with Autumnal blue skies and a temperature of 25 degrees.

We visited the island settlement of Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy in June 2015. Reached by a causeway, it is situated at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches. Paris is known as the city of romance and I wouldn’t argue with that. I just loved the togetherness of this couple that I took in Montmartre several years ago.
Friday Photo – Pearl River, Guangzhou, China
As China reels from the shocking virus and the aftermath of the death of whistle blower Dr Li, I am reminded of my only visit thus far to mainland China. It was in the mid 90s when powerhouse China was just starting to emerge. A fascinating short visit that I must blog about soon.
Friday Photos – Art Nouveau Architecture, Riga
Riga is famous for its Art Nouveau (or Jugendstil) architecture, a form most popular from the 1890’s until around 1910. There are over 100 buildings of this style in Riga, with the best examples in Alberta Street. The excellent Art Nouveau Museum is also at the end of the same street.
Friday Photo – The House Of Blackheads, Riga
I am on my second visit to Latvia’s capital. This building is named after the African missionary (St Mauritius) who refused German orders to execute locals who refused to convert from paganism to Christianity. This saw him beheaded himself, hence the building name.
