Mrs Wilbur & I visited Morocco in 2005 and as part of the trip found ourselves in Fes.
One of the most remarkable sights there is the ancient tannery where men stand in vats of dye all day to colour hides of leather to be made into clothing & footwear.
Work is arduous and cannot be good for the long-term health of the workers, but leather has been dyed pretty much this way for centuries.
My nickname is Fez, and I’ve always wanted to go there and have a photo of me next to the “Welcome to Fez” sign.
Wearing a fez too of course!
Did you like Fes? I went there in 2011. Last week I went to Essaouira and that gets a big thumbs up from me.
we loved Fes – far fewer tourists than Marrakesh. Hope to do Essaouira one day….
From Fes we went to Meknes where there were even fewer tourists. Go to Essaouira as soon as possible – they have big plans to build a marina and get the cruise ships coming in. They want more tourists. There are some great Easyjet flight deals. I went for £33 return.
