Meteora literally means ‘Suspended In The Air’ in Greek and is the name given to the area high up on a rocky outcrop above the town of Kalambaka in Thessaly in Northern Greece.
The UNESCO World Heritage site is home to six monasteries (twenty were built originally), perched seemingly precariously on the rocks.
The monasteries were built that way to keep the outside world out, especially the occupying Turks that ruled Greece from the mid 15th Century until 1821.
I visited the unique site in October 2006 as a side trip from Thessaloniki. Blessed with very good weather, I managed to get a few decent shots……
