Great Train Journey

In all the lists of the best train journeys, there is one that always amazes me by its absence.

In 1999 I took the Puno to Cusco Express as an hors-d’oeuvre to the Machu Picchu Trail.

The ten-hour journey from the shores of Lake Titticaca to the Inca capital passed through some stunning scenery, but never seems to get a mention in top rail journey lists.

Take a look at this short National Geographic video and a few of my photographs and make up your own mind…..

  1. Gorgeous!!

  2. I agree it’s a stunning journey but perhaps the reason is that (for once) the bus is better. I’m usually a passionate train fan, but the bus from Cusco to Puno makes several interesting stops including at the archaeological site of Raqchi and the highest point on the pass, so that gets my vote every time.

    1. Next time!
