This photo was taken in November 2003 at Betty’s Bay, Western Cape, South Africa.

We drove down to Hermanus from Cape Town hoping to spot southern right whales (to be disappointed) and discovered the penguin colony by chance.

We had stopped off for lunch and got speaking to the restaurant owner, who directed us to the jackasses.

There was not another soul around – contrast this with the far better known Boulders Beach near Cape Town, where there are often nearly as many tourists as flightless birds!

The spectacle made up for our lack of whale sightings the next day – Mrs Wilbur could not resist this photo opportunity!
