Austria
Amazing cities & breathtaking countryside, Austria has much going for it.
Salzburg is amongst my favourite cities anywhere in Europe. Amazing Christmas markets, a wonderful location surrounded by mountains and the meandering Salzach River winding through it.
Add to that the Mozart sites (he was born and raised in Salzburg) and the settings for the 1965 classic film the Sound of Music, and you have quite a draw.
We are off again in Christmas 2024 to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
France
Easily my most visited European city, being a convenient train ride away from London.
I expect France to go deep into the tournament so a good job that I have plenty of material.
I will start with Marseille, France’s second biggest city. We took a direct Eurostar that also visited Lille, Lyon & Avignon, all worthy destinations themselves.
Marseille has a cosmopolitan feel on account of all the immigrants from North Africa. An eclectic vibe, fabulous cuisine, lovely marina & old town, plus amazing sunsets. I must go back.
