Well, the April marathon is drawing to a close and before I write about Switzerland’s largest city, let’s have a little recap of A-Y.

Aleppo – Syria’s most historic city and an absolute jewel before the conflict

Bilbao – Spain’s Basque capital and home to the Guggenheim Museum

Cape Town – The beautiful South African city dominated by Table Mountain

Damascus – The capital of Syria where the stunning Umayyad Mosque is located

Edinburgh – Wonderful Scottish city, also home to the fabulous Fringe Festival

Frankfurt – Surprisingly pretty German city on the Main River

Guangzhou – Industrial Chinese city that I visited in the mid ’90s with its incredible snake restaurant

Havana – Vibrant capital of Cuba situated on the Caribbean. Classic car ride anybody?

Istanbul – Amazing city that straddles two continents that are divided by the Bosphorus

Jakarta – Indonesia’s current capital that is slowly sinking

Kaliningrad – A Russian enclave on the Baltic Sea, home to an interesting maritime museum

Luang Prabang – Spiritual city in Laos where hundred of monks are based

Marrakech – The most eclectic city in Morocco with its chaotic Djemaa el Fna Square

New Orleans – The US city on the Mississippi River where debauchery is encouraged

Oslo – Norway’s capital where some of my favourite ever museums are located

Petra – Ancient Nabatean city hewn out of the rock

Qobustan – City and region in Azerbaijan, home to the world’s best preserved mud volcanoes

Rio de Janeiro – No introduction necessary for Brazil’s party capital

Samarkand – Truly majestic Timurid city in Uzbekistan

Tbilisi – Georgia’s capital is wonderful and a must visit

Urganch – Gateway to the amazing Uzbekistan city of Khiva

Vientiane – Capital of Laos where many fine temples are located

Warsaw – Remarkable capital of Poland rebuilt after the devastation of WWII

AiX en Provence – Lovely French city surrounded by the beautiful countryside of Provence

Yerevan – Delightful capital of Armenia where I arrived on their Independence Day

Zurich

I have visited Zurich twice – once in 2015 as part of an independent train tour of Italy & Switzerland and again this year as an arrival point for a weekend in Liechtenstein.

The city is very pretty with the Limmat River running through it. Just a pity it is so eye-wateringly expensive to visit.

Both of my visits have been brief – once arriving by train from Zermatt for a day and the second time when we caught a train to the border with Liechtenstein, following Zurichsee for much of the route.

Consequently we didn’t visit any museums or go to any events, just strolling by the river and eating in restaurants.
